Almonds form the basis of many sweets and desserts in La Palma. The almond that grows on the island is tiny but tasty. Sweet, very sweet. It has always played an important role not only in baking but also in the economy and festivals. There is even a festival in its honour: the almond tree flower festival (fiesta del almendro en flor) in Puntagorda. The almond even stars in curious competitions such as the "almond shell" (cascado de almendras) that takes place during the almond tree flower festival. The almond captures a whole tradition that, despite the passage of time, is still part of life in the region, carrying on memories from the past.
